What’s your Mojo?? Well at SmarterHQ we like to make sure giving back to our community is part of ours. We call it #ServeSmarter, and this year we teamed up with TechPoint Foundation for Youth to participate in the Coder Dojo program.
CoderDojo is an after-school coding club at Central Elementary on Thursdays from 3:30-4:30pm for 4th and 5th graders. The club allows students to explore computer science by playing games and completing activities that teach them the basics of coding. The curriculum covers everything from simple coding games with Frozen, Star Wars, and Angry Birds, to programming your own stories and games.
The best part of CoderDojo is building relationships with the students and seeing their progress over the course of the year. As a class, 174 stages were completed at the end of the program! For each stage completed, the child received a certificate for their hard work and dedication to the after-school program. Though it can be difficult to encourage a class of 20 students to pay attention and work hard after school hours, it was a fun way for our SmarterStaff to participate in the community, while teaching and interacting with kids at the same time. And we'd like to think the kids had a good time with us, too.
Technology has become one of the fastest growing sectors of the economy and computer programming is increasingly recognized as a core competency for workers of the future. We are proud to have made an impact on these children’s lives as they grow in technology, and it was a perfect opportunity to take a break from the mundanity of work life. CoderDojo is always looking for Volunteers, and we highly recommend the program to those looking to share their time with the community.
